ROAD SAFETY IMPROVEMENT IN READING, UK

A notoriously dangerous road in Reading, which residents deemed ‘treacherous’ to cross, has been made safe thanks to a generous donation from the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church (PBCC). Reading Borough councillors expressed their appreciation when the Reading congregation of the PBCC contributed £2,000 to provide a zebra crossing spanning the infamous road, next to the local hospital.

Councillor Jan Gavin, who accepted the cheque with Councillor Tony Jones from trustees of the Reading Gospel Hall Trust, commented: “The crossing will be a significant safety improvement for visitors to Royal Berkshire Hospital and for the many university students lodging nearby. This will make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to cross, and will help school children on their way to and from school, as well as others in the area. We are most grateful to the Church for contributing to the cost.”

Members of the local congregation have been campaigning for the crossing for months, and raised the £2,000 entirely by the congregation’s voluntary giving. Trustee Marcus Roy said “The Plymouth Brethren have been meeting in Reading continuously since 1840, and this is just one of many ways in which we get involved with the wider community and their needs”.

A local resident in Redlands Road commented “It’s been really treacherous to cross this road, and I’ve seen so many near-misses, so this is a great addition.”
