Cardiff Steelworks Explosion

For the local businesses on East Moors Road in Cardiff, Wednesday 18th November was just like any other day.  Until 10:30, when a major explosion occurred at a nearby steelworks, rocking nearby buildings, startling people and signalling trouble.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, and although the resulting fire was quickly contained and most people accounted for, a number of steelworkers were injured or missing.  Specialist search and rescue teams were called in and a major incident declared.

RRT was on the scene by mid-afternoon, and having set up a tent in the blustery conditions, were soon serving hot and cold drinks and snacks to the emergency workers.  Amazingly, some of these teams had been on this site for over 6 hours – working hard – with no food at all and were very pleased to see RRT turn up with refreshments.

Sadly, 2 men lost their lives in this incident, and our thoughts and prayers are with their families.

The RRT team stood down later in the evening, along with most other emergency workers, allowing the specialist teams and investigations to take place.
