RRT OFFER FURTHER SUPPORT AS THATCH FIRE ISSUES CONTINUE

As the long winter drags on and the log burners continue to burn, so the risk of thatch fires continues to increase. Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service experienced an unprecedented number of thatch fires in a very busy two week period from the end of March into early April. Ready to help at a moment’s notice, and at any time day or night is the local Rapid Relief Team and a recent challenge for the Andover based charity team was in Upton on Sunday 7th April.

This was the Andover RRT teams second outing to support the local fire brigade in 4 days as they provided refreshements to crews from Andover, Whitchurch, Hungerford, Ludgershall, Newbury, Overton, Penton Mewsey, Romsey, Winchester and Eastleigh. The RRT support team arrived on site at 8.30pm and left shortly after midnight as the heavy brigade presence started to reduce.

All of the thatch was destroyed by the fire, while the first floor was damaged by smoke, fire and water and the ground floor was damaged by smoke and water.

Said one very grateful crew member “The feedback I have received from the fire fighters has been extremely positive and we are grateful for the service that you and your colleagues from The Brethren have provided. To have a happy smiling face offering hot drinks, snacks and refreshments, has made a huge difference to morale and the ability of our fire fighters to complete their work efficiently and safely”

Yes, Specs, you are right. While I read para 2, clearly I needed your ‘specs’. Bizarre delay in posting the story though!

Hadn’t noticed that, Robbie! How funny! P’raps it’s the Summer dryness that causes the thatch fires? The firemen are looked after whatever the season so it seems!

    1. Robbie says:

From the story: “As the long winter drags on”. Clearly written in Oz by an Ozzie as the long summer drags on here in the UK. 18C today in October.

    2. Ozzie says:

18C? That’s winter temps surely… :0 True what u say but… The person that wrote it was probably sitting in a freezing cold office in Oz ! 🙂

    3. Specs says:

Robbie – did you read the 2nd paragraph?? It mentions March, and April… which were indeed the end of a long draggy winter here in Uk… nothing about October that I can see. It’s merely that the post was written several months later (maybe their computer froze)
