SUSSEX BY THE SEA – sung at the South Downs

“We were expecting a nice lunch, but then got a free lunch, which greatly helps the funds”, said Dorothy Lazenby, organiser of 4SIGHT’s social club at Clayton Parish Hall. 4SIGHT is a registered charity (no.1075447) with a mission which includes the provision of high quality educational, social and leisure services to blind and partially sighted people.

A group of young persons from the local Plymouth Brethren Christian Church provided the midday meal for some 25 4SIGHT members at their weekly social gathering, to put their school Food & Nutrition lessons to positive practical use. “Quite amazingly”, continued Dorothy, “the washing-up was all done afterwards which we had not foreseen at all! And if that was not enough, the group of 6 boys and 5 girls sang songs to us for about half an hour at the end of the session with a piano accompaniment.” This included ‘Sussex by the Sea’, ‘If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands’, ‘When the Roll is called up yonder I’ll be there’, Titanium’, ‘When Peace like a River’ and ‘The Hippopotamus’. Dorothy added that it was a great pleasure when she was told that the youngsters would come and sing a little, but she never expected a choral performance!  One of the members commented that it was wonderful live music, sung with purity and clarity, and far better than listening to the radio.

Thanks to the generosity of voluntary supporters 4SIGHT have managed to keep going, but often come to the point when their survival is threatened and they are continuing only on a shoestring. 4SIGHT aims to be the leading provider of high quality medical, clinical, educational, social, leisure and advocacy related services for blind and partially sighted people living in and visiting West Sussex. Voluntary financial support for this worthy charity is very welcome, either as a one-off gift or a regular donation.
